Pikuniku mr sunshine4/19/2023 ![]() You’ll come across more treacherous areas later on, but even the ‘dungeon’ areas are extremely forgiving – Pikuniku is the most accessible, approachable game we’ve played in a long while and with persistence even the greenest of gamers should have no problem getting through it. The joy of the game comes from exploration – finding ‘hidden’ passages behind walls with zigzag lines (containing trophies and other goodies) and speaking with NPCs with their endearing lowercase speech bubbles.Ĭomical boss battles follow the three-hits-and-done formula and a handful of minigames (including a fun little rhythm game) help fulfil the retro call-back quota. You swing from hooks by lassoing them with a leg and the floaty physics are forgiving enough to throw yourself around without too much worry. The majority of puzzles involve kicking things with ‘Y’ (buttons, rocks, robots) or pushing objects onto switches to proceed. Hats are accessible via a menu on the left shoulder buttons, with a small inventory of collectible items on the corresponding right buttons. Different ‘hats’ enable you to make progress by, for example, watering a plant to create a platform or drawing a picture. You’ll journey through valleys, forests and mines on your adventure, dropping in on inhabitants in their various abodes and buying swag with the coins you collect. Jump is on ‘B’ and holding ‘A’ turns Piku into a legless ‘pill’ which rolls quickly over flat surfaces and squeezes into small spaces. The animation lends every member of the cast an adorable clumsiness as their legs struggle to keep up with their bodies. The eponymous Piku (joined by yellow/orange clone, Niku in co-op levels) is likeable despite being little more than a red pill with gangly legs. ![]() billboards pop up and he sends his robot minions to collect more and more resources across the world. What seemed like a good deal at first turns ominous when Sunshine Inc. They enlist him to help deal with the industrious Mr Sunshine, a jovial pink dude harvesting the village’s corn crop in return for ‘free money’. You control Piku, a red cave-dwelling ‘beast’ according to local legend, although upon actually meeting him the villagers discover he’s harmless and lovely. Pikuniku is a primary-coloured platformer with light exploration and puzzle elements, and although the blurb assures us it’s dystopian, you’ll bound through this jaunty world with a grin on your face. ![]() Dystopias – why do we love them so? We get more than our fair share of them in video games, but when the audience feels like they’re living in Blade Runner already, how do developers keep things feeling fresh? If you’re Sectordub, you ditch the grimy neon and rain for a primary-coloured 2D world and make your robots cute and cloud-shaped. ![]()

Rigoletto composer4/19/2023 ![]() ![]() Lucy Crowe, Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican last weekend. With so many people displaced and disparaged, the music goes to the heart of the matter while also speaking powerfully to those who feel politically exiled in our own country. Scored for solo soprano, chorus and orchestra, it explores a subject absolutely fit for today: what it is to long for your homeland. The London Symphony Chorus, back after 18 months of Covid restrictions and yet banished to the upper gallery, sang the Purcell with impressive intensity before tackling the most eagerly anticipated music of the evening, two movements from Julian Anderson’s new work, Exiles. He opened the LSO’s autumn season last week with a celebration of British music, brilliantly splicing Henry Purcell’s daringly emotional 1680 anthem Remember not, Lord, our offences with Michael Tippett’s regal 1962 fanfare Praeludium for Brass, Percussion and Bells. One of the many things we are going to miss about Simon Rattle when he leaves his post as music director of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2023 (to be replaced by Pappano) is his unerring ability to make musical connections, to show us the golden thread that links music across the ages. Fine playing in the pit, particularly at the opening of Act 3, is complemented by incisive singing from the muscular all-male chorus. Elsewhere, however, he has a habit of pulling the tempo around, notably in his love duet with Gilda, but the ever-vigilant Pappano never lets him slide off the rails. The Armenian tenor Liparit Avetisyan, as the Duke, dispatches La donna è mobile with crisp efficiency. She sings Caro nome with an innocence that turns to knowingness, adopting the same posture as the Venus of Urbino as she lies on her bed – a pose neatly picked up later by the wanton Maddalena (an underpowered Ramona Zaharia) as she and Sparafucile (Brindley Sherratt, in tremendous form) plot murder. The Cuban-American soprano Lisette Oropesa, as Gilda, is the star of the evening, silvery-voiced and apparently fragile, and yet steely in her delusion that the satanic Duke really loves her. ![]() Barring one act of gratuitous, singular cruelty, lifted from King Lear and introduced to underline Mears’s concept that the Duke is a dangerous psychopath, this is a remarkably straight production and obviously built to last, replacing David McVicar’s licentious staging, first seen in 2001.Ĭarlos Álvarez in the title role and Lisette Oropesa as Gilda in Rigoletto. They make a solid partnership, producing a performance that serves the music admirably and rarely gets in the way of Verdi’s sweepingly dramatic score. This is director of opera Oliver Mears’s debut production for the Royal Opera, and, surprisingly, it’s the first time that the company’s music director, Antonio Pappano, has conducted Rigoletto in his two decades at Covent Garden. The message is clear: the Duke views women as commodities, whether on canvas or cotton sheets. We know that in real life the 16th-century duke was a noted collector – and that Charles I snapped up several bargains when Mantua hit hard times – but neither of these images were ever in Mantua, or indeed Caravaggio’s Martyrdom of St Matthew, seen in a subverted tableau as the curtain rises. Later it’s replaced by the Rape of Europa by the same artist. T itian’s seductive Venus of Urbino dominates the opulent court of the rapacious Duke of Mantua in the first act of the Royal Opera’s new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto. ![]()

Do this action twice so that you will have the same image in three different layers. You can do this by dragging the background layer into the New Layer icon located at the bottom of the Layers Panel, or you can press the keyboard shortcut Cmd/Ctrl+J. I always like to keep a bottom layer intact in case anything goes wrong. In this case, we don’t have to worry about different depths. Let’s start with this simple example where we have two relatively defined planes where the subject is in front of a flat background. How to Blur a Simple Background in Photoshop When this happens, you can blur your background in post-processing quickly and easily using Photoshop. However, sometimes it's impossible to get the right conditions for background blur, or your camera settings may not have been appropriately set. The BEST way to achieve background blur is IN-CAMERA by choosing the correct aperture and focal length and considering the distance between the subject and the camera. This effect is often used in portrait photos, but I have seen it used effectively in ALL types of photography. For example, motion blur can make photos look much more dynamic.īlurring the background is another popular photography technique used to bring focus to a subject and really help it stand out. However, when blur is shot on purpose, it can be seen as a creative element that enhances an image. This is often caused by camera shake, and it’s a mistake that you usually want to avoid. Geogebra classic area polygon4/17/2023 ![]() In other words, use the formula area = (base1 + base2) x h x ½. If your shape is a trapezoid, add together the lengths of the two parallel sides, then multiply the sum by the height of the trapezoid. Since the length and width are the same for a square, simply square the length of one of the sides to calculate the area. For a rectangle, all you need to do is multiply length times width. For instance, to calculate the area of a triangle, use the formula ½ x base x height. Some types of polygons have their own special formulas that you can use to find the area. Multiply 42 x 3 x ½ to get an area of 63 square units. Multiply 7 by 6 (the number of sides in the hexagon) to find the perimeter of 42 units. For example, say you have a hexagon with an apothem that has a length of 3 units, and each side has a length of 7 units. ![]() You can find the perimeter by adding together the lengths of all the sides, or multiplying the length of a side by the number of sides. If you know the apothem and the side length, simply use the formula area = ½ x perimeter x apothem. The apothem is the distance from the exact center of the polygon to the center of any of the sides. If a polygon is regular-that is, all of its sides are the same length-you can easily find the area given the side length and the apothem. There are six of these sides to the hexagon, so multiply 20 x 6 to get 120, the perimeter of the hexagon.Ī polygon is any kind of closed, 2-dimensional shape with at least 3 straight sides and no curves. The bottom side of the triangle is 20 units long. ![]() You know that x = half the length of the bottom side of the triangle. If 10√3 represents "x√3," then you can see that x = 10. You know that the side across from the 60 degree angle has length = x√3, the side across from the 30 degree angle has length = x, and the side across from the 90 degree angle has length = 2x.The apothem cuts one of them in half, creating a triangle with 30-60-90 degree angles. ![]() You can think of it this way because the hexagon is made up of six equilateral triangles. Think of the apothem as being the "x√3" side of a 30-60-90 triangle. If the apothem is provided for you and you know that you're working with a regular polygon, then you can use it to find the perimeter. If the perimeter is provided for you, then you're nearly done, but it's likely that you have a bit more work to do. ![]() |
